On 17 March 2013, I Gede Natanael founded Mara Bali Wedding to help couples plan a wedding in Bali from thousands of miles away, often without ever having set foot on the island before their own ceremony.
The name Mara comes from two places at once. In Balinese, “mare” means “new.” It’s also the name of Natanael’s grandfather, Lukas I Made Mara, who lived through Japan’s occupation of Indonesia as a Romusha labourer. A name that once meant survival now opens a new chapter for every couple who carries it into their wedding day.
Thirteen years on, that beginning has grown into 100+ weddings across Bali, for couples from Indonesia and six countries abroad, the UK, Singapore, Russia, Australia, Japan, and the Philippines.
